Kerastase Oily Scalp Shampoo Review
As a Las Vegas hairstylist you would think the number one concern I hear from clients is that their scalp and hair is dry. We do live in a desert so I would not be surprised.
Although a dry scalp and dry hair is a common concern from clients here in Las Vegas, an oily scalp is definitely up there as well. I myself have an oily scalp and constantly looking for new tips and tricks to give me at least a few more hours of clean hair. Joking, but seriously, anything oily scalp related interests me because it benefits me and many of my clients.
Current hair Routine
Currently, I wash my hair twice a week. I have tried to stretch it out one more day but it is just not possible for me. If I do, my hair is 100% in a hat because even in a ponytail or bun it will look awfully oily.
Day 1: Wash, blow-dry and style
Day 2: Still clean, down and styled
Day 3: Down and beginning to look a bit flat and shiny or styled in a ponytail / bun
Day 4: Wash, blow-dry and style
It has taken me a while to find this sweet spot for my hair. With work and when I was in school, sometimes I just couldn't wash my hair. Overtime my hair began getting used to this routine and at the moment I am loving it.
I do have to say, 2 things that have completely made a difference in my hair are the following:
Blow drying instead of air drying: On wash day, I let my hair air dry about 70% and then blow dry the rest. This is the secret that has allowed me to only wash my hair 2 times a week. The fact that the moisture doesn’t just sit and air dry on my scalp has changed everything. I apply my products, let partially air dry, and then finish with the blowdryer and style. Guess why your hair lasts clean longer after getting it done at the hair salon compared to doing it yourself at home? Yup.
Kerastase Oily Scalp Shampoo: We had a class at the salon on the Kerastase product line we carry. At the end, our sales rep went around and matched us with a shampoo based on our hair concerns. My hand didn’t skip a beat when she asked who had an oily scalp. I couldn't wait to try this shampoo! It’s been a month and here are the results …
Second day hair has never looked more like first day hair before.
My hair is so soft and shiny.
I heat style my hair more than I ever have and even though I need a trim, my ends are still looking healthy even though I style a lot more. This shampoo balances out your hair’s moisture, keeping your dry ends hydrated.
One of the reasons why I did not like going so long between washes was because my scalp would get so itchy. This shampoo has helped so much with that.
Everyone is different
Although this shampoo will not work for everyone, I have really been enjoying it and will continue to use it. I am also not saying that by using this shampoo you will be able to stretch your washes out significantly. Remember, everyone’s body is different and everyone produces oil differently. This shampoo is meant to balance your scalp and control oil production, not completely stop it.
Just like it is not the best to wash your hair everyday, it is also not good to go too long between washes. Think of it like this, to “train” your face from getting oily, do you only wash it once a week? No, you make sure you are cleansing while using moisturizer because you know that lack of moisture will only produce more oil. However, you are always on the hunt for products that help balance out and control the oil production as much as possible.
Therefore, it is the same for our scalp. We cannot assume our scalp can go that long without washing in order to control oil.
For example, my sister, she does not have oily skin. Therefore, her scalp does not produce oil the same as mine does. She can go a week in between washes while I definitely cannot. For her, it is safe to only wash once a week because her slower oil production allows her to.
Meanwhile if I tried to always go a week without washing my hair like she does, I am risking the possibility of developing dandruff, irritation on my scalp, or even a yeast infection.
Conclusion
Finding your perfect hair routine should be fun. Try one product, give it some time and see what works and what doesn’t.
Being in tune with your body is very rewarding and you will see how hair routines are not a one size fits all.
